Launched in September 2021 as a joint undertaking of the the GCCM, the African Union Commission, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, International Organization for Migration, and the World Bank, the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative was designed to generate political momentum, a common evidence base and policy agenda on climate mobility across the continent.
The initiative produced the African Shifts Report and Agenda for Action, presented at the COP27 Climate Mobility Pavilion in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022, and the award-winning Voices from the Frontlines digital platform.
Since 2023, the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative has worked with a group of champion countries, including Botswana, Niger, Somalia, Uganda, Ghana, Mauritania, Nigeria, Liberia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and São Tomé and Principe on localizing climate mobility analysis and response through Climate Mobility Knowledge Deep Dives, tailored policy development, and the design and implementation of impact-oriented projects.
